A creepy new scare-tactic ad from Nevada Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle targets opposition Sen. Harry Reid’s position on immigration, calling Reid “the best friend an illegal alien ever had.” Way to demonize Reid, way to demonize the undocumented, way to go for the lowest common denominator.

This really made up laugh out loud. We just love Jon Stewart.

As we’ve been saying here for months @ Spar & Bernstein, there’s an obvious and total disconnect between rants and reality regarding the Immigration Debate.

The facts say one thing, the political rhetoric from some say another.

Studies report a decline in immigration, a decrease in undocumented immigrants, yet talk from the politicos on the right scream of Mexican drug cartels and bloody violence and being overrun at the borders.

It’s clear that the Self-Righteous Right, the Tea Partiers, and the like, with demonizing on the brain, would love nothing more than to build huge, forbidding walls along every border, deport all those who don’t sound or look like them, especially those of the brown skin persuasion, and the change the vibe of America from a country with welcoming arms to puts up a stiff hand, saying, “Back off, amigo, and return from where you came!”

Nice, huh?

This is Glenn Beck’s idea of the New America.

This is Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer’s idea, as well as that of her sneering henchman Sheriff Joe, of enforcing the “law of the land.”

This is Lou Dobbs’ idea of “sensible” immigration reform.

Let’s hope a sane America wakes up before it’s too late, before the Nov. elections, before the course of this country shifts to the dark side for years to come.

Let’s hope and pray.

Robert Rodriguez–like his good buddy and frequent collaborator Quentin Tarentino–sure loves his pulp fiction fiction and his B-movies. In a both an homage to, and hilarious send-up of, ’70’s B movies, there are more limbs severed and blood splattered in “Machete” than in the best of Sam Peckinpah. If you’re not generally a fan of movie violence, don’t let that scare you away. This is brilliant satire, my friend, and the violence is cartoon-like, no scarier than your average Saturday morning kids show. In fact lots of it’s hilariously funny. It makes for a wild ride, one of the most purely entertaining movies to come along in quite a while. Go see “Machete” both for its love of filmmaking and for its timely take on immigration along the border.

Rodriguez also loves his Hispanic brothers and sisters, whether legal or illegal (particularly the sisters played by the strong and sexy Michelle Rodriguez (no relation) and Jessica Alba). I can’t remember a recent movie that shows so much respect for the men and women who work hard to build our houses, tend our gardens, wash our dishes, and take care of our children. It’s appropriate that this film opened on Labor Day weekend.

Despite a few right-wing bloggers like Andrew Breitbart warning that “Machete” will encourage race war, this doesn’t mean Rodriguez has anything against white people–just against the kind of white people like a hypocritical right-wing politician (Robert De Niro) who calls immigrants “cockroaches” while secretly taking money from wealthy businessmen who want to keep down labor costs and from a Mexican drug lord (Steven Seagal) who wants to control traffic across the border.

Just in case you thought anti-immigrant sentiment existed only in the United States, here’s a vid about French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s crackdown on immigrants in France, which, like here, has drawn fire from its countrymen.

With anti-immigrant sentiment raging through the country these days and anger reaching the boiling point because of the possibility of a Muslim community center being built near Ground Zero in New York’s downtown Manhattan, a Muslim group called “My Faith My Voice” has launched an online video to fight back against “the rising tide of fear-mongering.”

There was a time when we really loved, respected, and admired Sen. John McCain.

He was a shot-down Vietnam war hero who spent nearly six years within that torture chamber called the Hanoi Hilton, refusing a way out to continue suffering with his troops. He was a political maverick who chose tough positions – especially on comprehensive immigration reform – based on nothing more than what he thought was right, unafraid to tick off the extreme right of his Republican party. He was a man who was willing to stand alone to make a difference.

Geez, what happened to that guy?

Along the way, especially during his 2008 presidential campaign, something definitely turned over in McCain.

He turned soft, appeasing the very people he once fight so vigorously.

He turned political, becoming the very type of cookie-cutter political animal he once decried, seeming to look no longer to lead the way to a better country but all but begging for votes.

Today, in the Arizona primary for McCain’s Senate seat, he faces off against J.D. Hayworth.

It has been the battle of McCain’s political life.

And as much as we loathe what McCain has evolved into, it’s still a no-brainer to pick him over that lout Hayworth, who’s one of the most vocal anti-immigration yammermouths you’ll ever find.

McCain, by all polls, will come out victorious – but at what price?

He has gone from a man who so beautifully had worked with the late Ted Kennedy on creating a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants to someone staunchly against illegal immigration, emphasizing aggressive border protection, speaking in favor of Arizona’s unseemly SB 1070 immigration law, and even supporting hearings contesting the 14th Amendment provision that ensures American citizenship as a birthright.

Those positions will make his anti-immigrant constituency happy. They will keep him his Senate seat, save his political life.

But so what.

It’s McCain’s legacy that is forever ruined, flip-flopping so much on so many important issues that he should be covered in skin burns by now.

Oh, we’ll congratulate McCain at the end of the day for his win over Hayworth the Huckster, but we’ll also wonder, if not hope and pray: When will the John McCain we once loved and admired and respected return to us to lead again?

If this doesn’t make you fall on the floor laughing, you ain’t breathing.

We @ The Law Offices of Spar & Bernstein have been making this plea to Michael Moore for nearly a year now, first daily, then weekly – on Twitter, in emails, on Facebook.

It’s what we feel we must do, despite the fact that Moore has yet to repond to us on any level.

No problem.

We will continue, undeterred.

The fact is, the immigration debate desperately needs someone like Moore these days, now more than ever, with SB 1070 sprouting kindred – and equally unseemly – immigration law proposals in places like Virginia and Florida and God knows where next.

Moore’s filmmaking talents, as well as his incredibly provocative voice, will undoubtably bring this issue smack in the center of the American discussion – and have it stay there.

And that’s what has to happen if we can ever hope for any kind of real change.

We know, of course, that many will loathe Moore’s documentary to no end, as many will love it, but we also know that, based on his track record with major issues such as health care and gun control and Bush politics, no one, absolutely no one, will be able to ignore it.

That’s what immigration needs.

To be impossible to ignore.

To be talked about and talked about and talked about to death.

The kind of talk that gets people really thinking, that opens up people’s eyes to the reality, that gets people to move in a significant way.

So, please, if you agree with this, if you too would love have Moore’s next flick to take on the battle for comprehensive immigration reform as much as we do, pass this message on.
