Silence on Immigration Talk: Calm Before Storm?

Have you noticed something odd since last Tuesday’s primary, which voted back in Arizona Sen. John McCain while sending a clear message to, if not slapping upside the head Florida Attorney General and governor wannabe Bill McCollum?

It’s become, in the words of Simon and Garfunkel, the sound of silence.

All of a sudden, virtually all the sneering, divisive talk from the Self-Righteous Right, the Tea Party Animals and the like has, mercifully, hushed down.

Nary a peep about cracking down on illegal immigrants or toughening border control or the urgent need for more laws like SB 1070.

Nothing.

At least for the moment.

The political football that is immiration has simply been placed to rest on the ground for a bit.

And while I’m enjoying the lull, I don’t take it seriously, don’t think it will last long.

With the November elections just a few months away, it’s just a matter of time until the political machines rev up again and use immigration as a way to score points with an angry, unemployed, struggling-for-money constituency.

How much time do we get a break from the racism and the racial profiling and the scapegoating?

I don’t know.

But I have the uncomfortable sense that all this quiet is merely a calm before yet another ugly storm.
