Pres. Obama Ready to Meet w/ Key Senators on Immigration

by mgeffner on March 8, 2010

obamaOver the weekend came the long-awaited news that the President is finally ready to focus attention on immigration, scheduled to meet at the White House this week with two key senators and begin crafting a bill on the issue.

White House spokesman Nicholas Shapiro said Obama will meet with Democratic Sen. Chuck Schumer of New York and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina on Monday.

“The president’s commitment to fixing our broken immigration system remains unwavering,” Shapiro said.

Considering that Obama’s State of the Union address contained only 38 words on the topic, pro-immigrant rights activists were not only starting to wonder about the President’s commitment to comprehensive immigration reform but frustrated enough to beging venting some pretty harsh criticism about his failure to deliver on past promises.

Question is: Is Obama simply trying for the moment to appease a good chunk of constituency, namely the Latino community, or does he really mean business this time?
